There are different types of thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiter, cancer, hyperparathyroidism, myxedema, iodine deficiency, thyroiditis and autoimmune thyroid disease. This article will help you know about the symptoms of some of the disorders of this gland.

Hypothyroidism - It is one of the common disorders of this gland. It results due to lower secretion of thyroxine hormone. The symptoms of this disorder include depression, sluggishness, frequent cold, increased menstrual flow, forgetfulness, dry skin and hair, constipation, etc.

Hyperthyroidism - It is also one of the common disorders of this gland. It results due to too much secretion of thyroxine hormone. The symptoms of this disorder include shivering hands, nervousness, irritability, weight loss, decreased menstruation, increased perspiration, warm skin, thinning hair, weak leg muscles, etc.

Goiter - This disorder is a condition where the thyroid gland is swollen. It is mainly caused due to iodine deficiency in the diet. Some of the symptoms of this disorder are swollen front of the neck and protruding eyes.

Thyroid cancer - It is the cancer of this gland. The symptoms of this disease are lump or nodule in front of the neck near the Adam's apple, neck swelling, hoarseness or difficulty in speaking, voice changes, swollen lymph nodes, swollen neck lymph nodes, neck pain, throat pain, difficulty in swallowing, difficulty in breathing, etc.

Myxedema - It is the skin and tissue disorder resulting due to hypothyroidism. Some of the symptoms of this disorder include skin thickening, rough & coarse skin, change in facial appearance, swollen lips, thickening nose, muscle pain, hearing impairment, puffiness around the eyes, thinning and brittle hair, bald patches, weight gain, constipation, lethargy, slow speech, mental problems, dry skin, etc.

Autoimmune thyroid diseases - The most common autoimmune diseases that attack this gland are Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Graves' disease is a form of hyperthyroidism and its symptoms are similar to that of hyperthyroidism. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a form of hypothyroidism and its symptoms are similar to that of hypothyroidism.
